End of Season Awards

On Saturday 15th May the Craven & District Badminton League brought its season to a close by holding the annual presentation evening.

Guests were entertained by magician, Liam Rowbotham, before Mr Derek Seed, president of the league, presented the awards.

Winners of the Mixed Div 1 were Moorlands, with Skipton as runners-up. Skipton came a close second in Mixed Div 2, losing out by one point to the winners, Croft. The Ladies Division was won by Colne, with a team which balanced youth and experience; again Skipton were runners-up. The Mens Div 1 was won by  Nelson & Colne College followed by Settle, whilst Croft were winners in Mens Div 2, followed by Skipton. In the composite league, Settle were runners-up to Colne.
Tournament winners were awarded trophies as follows:
Ladies' Doubles - Jeanette Howarth (Moorlands) & Vicky Ryan (Skipton), Runners-up - Linda Wilkinson & Louise Kirkbride (Skipton)
Mens' Doubles - John Lickess & Jordan Palmer (Colne), Runners-up - Mickey & Craig Thompson (Greenhead)
Mixed Doubles - Fiona Stapley & Stephen Dale (Skipton), Runners-up - Hilary Smith & Russell Gill (St. Andrews)
The Young Player of the Year Award went to James Crozier of Skipton, whilst Croft won the trophy for the Most Hospitable Club.

Final League Tables Uploaded

The final league tables for the 2009/2010 season have been uploaded to the Craven League page.

Congratulations go to Moorlands, Croft, Colne and Nelson and Colne for winning the various leagues. Skipton can be proud of a strong season, coming second in four leagues and third in the Men's Division 1 (due to a Duckworth Lewis method of points awarded for an abandoned game due to a waterlogged court, otherwise they would have finished second)!

Craven and District Badminton League Mixed Doubles Tournament

The Craven Badminton League Mixed Doubles Tournament took place on Sunday 21st March.

Pairs from a number of clubs across the Craven area took part in this annual tournament, which took place at Holy Family School, Keighley. It was pleasing to see both fresh and familiar faces taking part in what was a thoroughly enjoyable day's badminton.

After some hard fought games in the group stages, four couples went on to play in the semi-finals.  In the first of these, Hilary Smith and Russell Gill of St Andrews beat Margaret Robinson and Derek Seed of Settle in three sets (18-21, 21-17, 21-16), while the second semi-final was an all-Skipton affair with Fiona Stapley and Stephen Dale narrowly defeating Vicky Ryan and Tom Knapp, again in three sets (15-21, 21-18, 21-20).

The final was an equally tense encounter which went right to the wire with Fiona Stapley and Stephen Dale the eventual winners (21-16, 20-21, 21-15).
A big thank you to all who took part.

Craven and District Badminton League Mens and Ladies Tournament

The annual Craven and District Badminton League mens and ladies doubles tournament was held on Sunday 15th November at Holy Family School, Keighley.

This year saw a high number of entries, with players from Skipton, Colne, Moorlands, Settle, Greenhead, Croft and St. Andrews taking part in what was a thoroughly enjoyable day's badminton.

In the mens doubles event, 14 pairs entered. In the first semi final, father and son Stephen and Tom Dale of Skipton were narrowly beaten by Mickey Ruddock and Craig Thompson of Greenhead, 13-15, 15-12, 15-13, while in the second semi final, John Lickess and Jordan Palmer beat Colne clubmates Mike Fulforth and Peter Macro, 15-12, 12-15, 15-8.

A nail-biting final match saw John and Jordan come away as winners by the narrowest of margins against Mickey and Craig, 15-14, 15-14.

The ladies doubles was a closely fought affair, with the final being contested by Jeanette Howarth (Moorlands) and Vicky Ryan (Skipton), against Linda Wilkinson and Louise Kirkbride, both of Skipton. Louise and Linda fought well in the early rounds, however the experience of Jeanette and Vicky was enough to seal victory, 15-8, 15-9.

New website

Well done Tom for revamping website.

I hope members, junior members & prospective members contribute to the website. The more we use it the better it will become.

Well done Tom

I agree with Peter. Great new site well done. Have you written it from scratch or used a template?

A few questions:

  1. Will we be able to see match results and league tables?
  2. What is going to happen about posting results from matches? Do you want the team captain to post results or can individuals post them informally?
  3. Do you need any help in running the website?

Regards

Stephen

Thanks Stephen

Thanks Stephen. I'm glad you found the site. Keep spreading the word.
I built the site using Drupal, which has lots of functionality already and thousands of bolt on modules to use.
The idea for the site is that it's a resource for the club and the league (and others who want to contribute). People can be assigned as editors so that when viewing fixtures they get an edit tab at the top of the page. There will be the option to enter the match results which will then display to all users when they view a fixture. I'm also planning to add another block to one of the side columns to show recent results as a table, linking to a full page of all results.
I intend to set up a league table shortly that will be built dynamically from all the results (but that does mean receiving and entering the results from all the matches in the league). Alternatively this could be set up as a static table on the Craven League page but it would only get updated infrequently.
I thought it would be good to keep the number of people who are assigned as editors to a minimum so that results can be properly verified before being posted. Anyone can, however, add comments or contribute to the forums.
I hope people will keep making suggestions and writing content so that the site keeps growing.
Tom
